The United States will host the G20 for the first time in nearly 20 years—and President Trump’s resort is at the center of the global stage.

President Donald J. Trump announced Friday that the 2026 G20 Summit—a key gathering of the world’s largest economies—will take place at his own resort, Trump National Doral in Miami. The announcement immediately stirred a mix of celebration, skepticism, and controversy.

“Everybody wants it there,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “It’s beautiful. It’s convenient. And most importantly—it’s happening at cost.”

Why Doral? Convenience Meets Controversy

Trump highlighted the resort’s proximity to Miami International Airport and its capacity to host dozens of world leaders, staff, and security. "It’s minutes from the tarmac, and we already have the infrastructure to handle it,” Trump noted.

The 800-acre resort includes four golf courses, a luxury spa, conference facilities, and a ballroom over 24,000 square feet—ample space for one of the most security-intensive events in international diplomacy.

Critics and ethics watchdogs quickly raised concerns. By selecting a property he owns, Trump reopens long-standing questions about the intersection of his business empire and public office.

“Hosting the G20 at a sitting president’s business is unprecedented,” said one former ethics official. “It’s not just bad optics—it’s a fundamental breach of public trust.”

Trump brushed off criticism, stating that the resort would operate at cost and that no taxpayer dollars would contribute to his personal profits.

Administrative Coordination and Planning

The U.S. Treasury Department, led by Secretary Scott Bessent, will handle formal coordination of the summit. Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett has been named as the lead planner, overseeing logistics, scheduling, and global coordination.

The summit is scheduled for December 14–15, 2026. Doral had previously been floated as a venue for the 2020 G7 before plans were canceled amid bipartisan backlash.

Global and Local Response

Reactions were mixed. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez called it a “milestone moment” that puts the city “at the heart of global diplomacy.” Florida Governor María Salazar hailed the announcement as an economic boon for the state.

International leaders offered measured responses, with several diplomatic missions signaling that while the location is unconventional, they will abide by protocol and attend.

Trump also made headlines by casting doubt on whether he will attend this year’s G20 Summit in South Africa, citing disagreements with the country’s land redistribution policies. “We’re looking into it,” he said, implying that another senior official may represent the U.S.

The move to host a global summit at Trump Doral aligns with the President’s long-standing approach of blending personal brand with national power. From Mar-a-Lago diplomacy to North Korea summits in unconventional settings, Trump has often challenged diplomatic norms.

This summit marks a return to that playbook, and once again brings questions of propriety, branding, and global perception to the forefront of U.S. foreign policy.

Acquired in 2012 for a reported $150 million, Trump National Doral is one of the flagship properties in the Trump Organization’s portfolio. It has hosted PGA tournaments and large corporate events and is known for its iconic “Blue Monster” golf course.

According to financial disclosures, the resort saw declining revenue during and after Trump’s first presidency but has recently rebounded.

The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an annual forum for governments and central bank governors from 19 countries and the European Union. It represents over 80% of global GDP and more than 75% of international trade.

Past summits have addressed financial regulation, climate change, pandemic response, and geopolitical crises. The 2025 G20 will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa.

With the summit more than a year away, attention now turns to planning, security logistics, and political fallout.

For Trump, the announcement signals a bold diplomatic maneuver—and a calculated risk. For Miami, it marks another step in its transformation into a world-class city for politics, sports, and global finance.

As the world converges on Trump National Doral in 2026, the line between power and property will once again be tested on a global stage.
