Iran Conflict Keeps Global Economy on Edge as Diplomacy and Military Pressure Continue

GENEVA — Six months into the conflict between Iran and the United States, diplomatic efforts are continuing alongside intense economic and military pressure, leaving the region facing an uncertain path toward a settlement.

Reuters reported this week that the conflict has reached what it described as an endgame characterized by a costly stalemate. Iran remains under significant economic pressure but has maintained its political system and continues to resist U.S. demands.

Diplomacy Faces a Difficult Path

The confrontation has created consequences far beyond the Middle East.

Energy markets remain sensitive to developments around the Strait of Hormuz, while businesses worldwide are watching for further disruptions to oil supplies, shipping and financial markets.

Iran's economic difficulties have also deepened. Reuters reported that inflation has reached about 66% and that the country's trade has declined significantly.

Diplomatic efforts involving Qatar and Pakistan offer one possible path toward negotiations. Tehran has indicated that it remains willing to consider diplomacy, although major differences remain between the two sides.

The challenge for negotiators is finding an agreement that addresses security concerns while providing Iran with enough economic relief to make a settlement politically acceptable.

For the United States, maintaining economic pressure is intended to force Tehran toward concessions. For Iran, continuing resistance may be viewed as a way to improve its negotiating position.

The longer the stalemate continues, however, the greater the potential economic costs.

Global businesses are therefore watching the diplomatic track closely. A breakthrough could ease pressure on energy markets and international trade, while another escalation could produce renewed volatility across the global economy.
