The tribute episode, set to air October 28, 2025, at 9 ET/PT on CBS, revisits Ducky’s early years in the 1990s, with British actor Adam Campbell stepping into the role of the young medical examiner.
Campbell, 45, previously portrayed Ducky in flashbacks on NCIS four times and now returns to embody the beloved character in a prequel storyline that explores his first encounters with Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played in Origins by Austin Stowell. “The costume department managed to get [McCallum's] actual hat, so I wear the hat in the episode. The first time I put it on my head, it was like a crown. It was special,” Campbell says.
The episode, titled “The Edge,” not only honors McCallum’s enduring presence on television but also features his own musical compositions. McCallum, who passed away in September 2023 at the age of 90, was an accomplished musician, and the episode incorporates his instrumental work, including “The Edge,” famously sampled by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg for their 2000 hit The Next Episode. The montage ending of the episode features McCallum’s rendition of Yesterday, creating a poignant musical tribute that bridges generations of fans.

NCIS previously paid tribute to McCallum in Season 21 with the February 2024 episode “The Stories We Leave Behind,” co-written by Brian Dietzen, who plays Ducky’s protégé, Dr. Jimmy Palmer. “We know that Gibbs and Ducky first crossed paths in 1980 and then again 12 years later in Camp Pendleton. So we're really adhering to the mothership's canon here,” Monreal explains.
The episode also explains Ducky’s longtime habit of calling Gibbs by his middle name, Jethro, a playful detail fans of the original series will appreciate. Campbell’s portrayal captures the combination of intellectual curiosity, humor, and compassion that made McCallum’s Ducky such an enduring figure in the NCIS universe.

“He said always try to find the comedy and the lightness of the moment. Don't be afraid to find things amusing, even if they're grotesque,” Campbell recalls.
North and Monreal described bringing Campbell back for the tribute as a “no-brainer.” His embodiment of Ducky is both a homage to McCallum and a seamless continuation of the character for prequel audiences. Harmon, who serves as both executive producer and series narrator for Origins, personally welcomed Campbell to the project, ensuring that the legacy of Ducky would remain intact.
