NCIS: Origins' Pays Tribute to David McCallum: Exclusive First Look

The prequel series NCIS: Origins is honoring the legendary David McCallum, who played Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS for two decades, with a heartfelt tribute in its upcoming Season 2 episode. The tribute episode, set to air October 28, 2025, at 9 ET/PT on CBS, revisits Ducky’s early years in the 1990s, with British actor Adam Campbell stepping into the role of the young medical examiner.

Campbell, 45, previously portrayed Ducky in flashbacks on NCIS four times and now returns to embody the beloved character in a prequel storyline that explores his first encounters with Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played in Origins by Austin Stowell. Fans will notice Campbell wearing Ducky’s signature bowtie and, in a special nod to McCallum, the actor even dons the late actor’s iconic fedora.

“The costume department managed to get [McCallum's] actual hat, so I wear the hat in the episode. The first time I put it on my head, it was like a crown. It was special,” Campbell says.

The episode, titled “The Edge,” not only honors McCallum’s enduring presence on television but also features his own musical compositions. McCallum, who passed away in September 2023 at the age of 90, was an accomplished musician, and the episode incorporates his instrumental work, including “The Edge,” famously sampled by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg for their 2000 hit The Next Episode. The montage ending of the episode features McCallum’s rendition of Yesterday, creating a poignant musical tribute that bridges generations of fans.

Honoring a Legend

NCIS previously paid tribute to McCallum in Season 21 with the February 2024 episode “The Stories We Leave Behind,” co-written by Brian Dietzen, who plays Ducky’s protégé, Dr. Jimmy Palmer. That episode included a touching scene in which Michael Weatherly’s Special Agent Tony DiNozzo assisted Palmer in tying a bowtie during Ducky’s memorial service, highlighting the camaraderie and respect shared between McCallum’s character and his colleagues. Mark Harmon’s Gibbs, unfortunately, could not appear due to scheduling conflicts, but the tribute resonated deeply with fans.

Now, Origins continues the homage, exploring a pivotal moment in Ducky’s early career. The narrative is set during his first encounter with Gibbs at Camp Pendleton, an event that aligns with established NCIS canon. Executive producers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal carefully ensured that the storyline respected the timeline and character development of the original series.

“We know that Gibbs and Ducky first crossed paths in 1980 and then again 12 years later in Camp Pendleton. So we're really adhering to the mothership's canon here,” Monreal explains.

The episode also explains Ducky’s longtime habit of calling Gibbs by his middle name, Jethro, a playful detail fans of the original series will appreciate. Campbell’s portrayal captures the combination of intellectual curiosity, humor, and compassion that made McCallum’s Ducky such an enduring figure in the NCIS universe.

McCallum’s Guidance and Campbell’s Performance

Adam Campbell, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, received guidance and encouragement from McCallum before the actor’s passing. While McCallum never dictated exactly how to play young Ducky, he did offer insights into the character’s demeanor.

“He said always try to find the comedy and the lightness of the moment. Don't be afraid to find things amusing, even if they're grotesque,” Campbell recalls.

North and Monreal described bringing Campbell back for the tribute as a “no-brainer.” His embodiment of Ducky is both a homage to McCallum and a seamless continuation of the character for prequel audiences. Harmon, who serves as both executive producer and series narrator for Origins, personally welcomed Campbell to the project, ensuring that the legacy of Ducky would remain intact.

Behind the Scenes of “The Edge”

In addition to the emotional resonance, the episode provides fans with glimpses of McCallum’s personality and creative endeavors beyond acting. The use of his music allows the audience to celebrate his multifaceted talents while connecting with Ducky’s character on a deeper level. North shares a personal anecdote about the musician-actor:

“Once on the 'NCIS' set, I was wearing a Snoop Dog shirt, and [McCallum] hugged me. He said to me, 'Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have been very good to me. They sampled "The Edge" and got a No. 1 hit and that's pretty cool.'”

This blending of McCallum’s artistic contributions with the narrative of Origins elevates the episode from a simple tribute to a celebration of his entire legacy.

A Tribute for Fans and New Viewers

NCIS: Origins’ Season 2 tribute episode offers both long-time fans and newcomers a chance to appreciate David McCallum’s influence. Through careful attention to costume, character, canon, and music, the prequel series ensures that Ducky remains as charming, witty, and beloved as ever. Campbell’s performance, paired with thoughtful production choices, allows McCallum’s spirit to live on, not just as a character, but as a cherished icon of television history.

Fans can tune in to CBS on October 28, 2025, at 9 ET/PT to witness Campbell’s portrayal and experience the moving tribute that honors one of the most enduring figures in NCIS lore.
