NEW YORK — Ethereum investment products in the United States are expanding their focus beyond simple price exposure as staking becomes an increasingly important part of the cryptocurrency investment market.
Regulatory filings show that 21Shares renamed its Ethereum fund the 21Shares Ethereum Staking ETF and updated its structure and benchmark during August.
Grayscale has also updated the structure of its Ethereum Staking ETF, with its regulatory filings detailing arrangements for distributing staking-related consideration to shareholders.
Wall Street Moves Deeper Into Ethereum
Traditional investment products initially gave American investors a way to gain exposure to cryptocurrency prices without directly holding digital assets.
Staking introduces another potential source of return.
Ethereum uses a proof-of-stake system in which participants can help secure the network while receiving rewards.
Investment companies are now working to incorporate those rewards into exchange-traded products.
That could make Ethereum more attractive to investors accustomed to traditional financial products.
It also illustrates how crypto is becoming more closely integrated with Wall Street.
The development is particularly significant because ETFs can be purchased through conventional brokerage accounts.
Investors do not necessarily need to manage private keys or operate cryptocurrency wallets themselves.
However, staking products also introduce additional considerations.
Returns can vary.
There are also technological, regulatory and market risks.
Ethereum's price can remain highly volatile even when staking produces additional income.
The growth of staking-focused products nevertheless demonstrates that the cryptocurrency industry is becoming more sophisticated.
Financial firms are increasingly trying to transform blockchain-based activities into investment products that fit within traditional portfolios.
For U.S. investors, Ethereum's evolution could eventually make digital assets look less like a separate financial ecosystem and more like another category within mainstream investment markets.
